Race report – 1932 Indianapolis 500
CROZET TRIUMPHANT IN GRUELING BRICKYARD MARATHON AS PELTONEN’S LUCK VANISHES!

INDIANAPOLIS, MAY 30 — Under a heavy canopy of clouds that gave way to a shimmering Midwestern sun, the greatest spectacle in racing unfolded yesterday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In a contest that pushed both man and machine to the absolute precipice of endurance, Drik Crozet, at the wheel of his meticulously prepared Bugatti T51a, seized the checkered flag to claim victory in the 13th round of the championship.
The Rolling Charge
The afternoon began with the haunting wail of twenty non-supercharged European and American engines, specially modified with heavy-duty cooling systems to survive the relentless high-revving demands of the 2.5-mile rectangular oval. Following the shiny Mercedes-Benz pace car driven by local celebrity Gregory Myers, the field took the green flag in a thunderous rolling start. While Drik Crozet held the pole, it was Markus Peltonen in his Bugatti T51-1 who unleashed a ferocious burst of speed, overtaking Crozet early to command the race from the front.

Early Calamity at the Wall
The treacherous banking claimed its first victim on a mere five laps into the contest. Hayley Smith, piloting a Delage 2LCV, suffered a terrifying rotation that sent the machine into the concrete fencing. The impact resulted in a shredded front-right tire, forcing Smith to perform a heart-stopping crawl back to the pit lane. Despite this early disaster, Smith displayed the true spirit of a racer, eventually fighting back to a very respectable 7th-place finish.

The Battle of the Titans: Speed vs. Agility
One of the most enthralling sights for the 1932 crowd was the duel between the American Studebaker of Vesa Tolonen and the agile European Bugatti of Kent LeFredge. Tolonen’s machine was a beast on the long stretches, using raw American horsepower to pull away, only for the nimble Bugatti to reel him in through the 90-degree banked turns. However, Tolonen’s run was cursed by the rubber; the driver was forced to endure three separate punctures during the race, a staggering misfortune that relegated the heavy Studebaker to 10th place.

Mid-Race Mayhem and the “Skewed” Bugatti
The fabled “Brickyard” lived up to its reputation for danger around lap 17. A colossal collision near the fencing involved Moisés Pereira, Zan Darling, and Kai Syvertsen. Pereira’s Jones-Miller was sighted by spectators traveling backward at 70 km/h with wheels entirely missing from the chassis. Syvertsen’s machine was too badly mangled to continue, leading to his retirement.

In the wake of the chaos, Kari Uotila provided a display of grim determination. Despite a visibly skewed front-right wheel and multiple punctures that sent smoke trailing from his Bugatti, Uotila refused to pit, literally “optimizing” his car to only turn left. He haunted the track for nearly 100 laps before a final, violent crash ended his afternoon.

Withoeft’s Great Gamble
As the race crossed the century mark, Daniel Withoeft in the Alfa Romeo P3 attempted a strategy that had the grandstands whispering in disbelief. While the leaders pitted for fuel and Firestone rubber, Withoeft gambled on his original set of tires, hoping to snatch the lead through sheer persistence. For a brief, shining moment, the Alfa Romeo led the field. However, the gamble turned to ash as the tread gave up the ghost. Withoeft suffered several harrowing spins before being forced into the pits for fresh tires, ultimately finishing 8th after nearly losing his podium spot.

The Mechanical Heartbreak
The defining moment of the race occurred on lap 90. Markus Peltonen, who had maintained a steady lead of 20 seconds and seemed destined for the winner’s circle, was suddenly betrayed by his engine. A catastrophic spark plug failure sapped the Bugatti’s power, forcing a frantic, unscheduled pit stop to replace the fouled components. This delay was all the opening Drik Crozet needed. He surged past the limping Peltonen and never looked back.

The Final Dash to the Bricks
Crozet crossed the finish line with over a minute’s advantage, a masterclass in consistency and mechanical sympathy. Markus Peltonen managed to salvage 2nd place through sheer grit, while the Talbot 700s of Renaud Ledu and Erik Halin showcased the legendary reliability of the marque to take 3rd and 4th. Paul von Rosen rounded out the top five, overcoming a brush with the wall that had left his front tire flat earlier in the day. Finally the sun shone to the Talbot garage after years of trying.

Further down the order, Ville Korkiakoski brought his Delage home in 6th, followed by the resilient Ruy Lázaro in 9th, whose Jones-Miller utilized its superior fuel endurance to outlast many of the faster machines. Kent LeFredge finished 11th, having survived multiple skirmishes, while Alex Henry and Michel Pichon finished 13th and 14th in a display of steady, if unspectacular, driving. Pichon left the protest as he claimed the organiser might have missed some of his laps, but the process was still under review while we went into press.
